Adventure
Adventure
If you love adventure and are a bit of a person with a compulsive desire for excitement, you should not wait for your holiday to try out different things. Instead, incorporate your love for fun and adventure into your everyday life by choosing a hobby that will represent everything you need. And if you are unsure where to start, here are some great suggestions on how to add a bit of spice into your daily schedule.
Depending on your idea of fun and your definition of adventure, a few of the possibilities include the following:
- Hiking and Backpacking: Hiking is a long, vigorous walk, usually on trails or footpaths in the countryside. Backpacking is the outdoor recreation of carrying gear on one’s back, while hiking for more than a day. It is often but not always an extended journey, and may or may not involve camping outdoors.
- Bicycling (on or off road): Bicycling or biking is the use of bicycles for transport, recreation, exercise or sport. People engaged in cycling are referred to as “cyclists”, “bicyclists”, or “bikers”.
- Horseback Riding: Horse riding includes the disciplines of riding, driving, or vaulting with horses. This broad description includes the use of horses for practical working purposes, transportation, recreational activities, exercises and competitive sport.
- Skydiving: This is a method of transiting from a high point to Earth with the aid of gravity, involving the control of speed during the descent using a parachute or parachutes. It may involve more or less free-falling (the skydiving segment) which is a period when the parachute has not yet been deployed and the body gradually accelerates to terminal velocity.
- BASE Jumping: BASE jumping is the recreational sport of jumping from fixed objects, using a parachute to descend safely to the ground. “BASE” is an acronym that stands for four categories of fixed objects from which one can jump: building, antenna, span, and earth (cliff). Participants exit from a fixed object such as a cliff, and after an optional freefall delay, deploy a parachute to slow their descent and land.
- Gliding/Hang Gliding: Hang gliding is an air sport or recreational activity in which a pilot flies a light, non-motorised foot-launched heavier-than-air aircraft called a hang glider. Most modern hang gliders are made of an aluminium alloy or composite frame covered with synthetic sailcloth to form a wing. Typically the pilot is in a harness suspended from the airframe, and controls the aircraft by shifting body weight in opposition to a control frame.
- Rock Climbing: Rock climbing is a sport in which participants climb up, down or across natural rock formations or artificial rock walls. The goal is to reach the summit of a formation or the endpoint of a usually pre-defined route without falling. Rock climbing is a physically and mentally demanding sport, one that often tests a climber’s strength, endurance, agility and balance along with mental control.
- Scuba Diving: Scuba diving is a mode of underwater diving where the diver uses a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba), which is completely independent of surface supply, to breathe underwater. Scuba diving may be done recreationally or professionally in a number of applications, including scientific, military and public safety roles, but most commercial diving uses surface-supplied diving equipment when this is practicable.
- River Rafting: Rafting and river rafting are recreational outdoor activities which use an inflatable raft to navigate a river or other body of water. This is often done on different degrees of rough water. Dealing with risk and the need for teamwork is often a part of the experience.
- Water Skiing: Water skiing is a surface water sport in which an individual is pulled behind a boat or a cable ski installation over a body of water, skimming the surface on two skis or one ski. The sport requires sufficient area on a smooth stretch of water, one or two skis, a tow boat with tow rope, two or three people (depending on local boating laws), and a personal flotation device. In addition, the skier must have adequate upper and lower body strength, muscular endurance, and good balance.
- Motorcycling: Motorcycle sport is a broad field that encompasses all sporting aspects of motorcycling. The disciplines are not all races or timed-speed events, as several disciplines test a competitor’s various riding skills. One aspect is road rally. It is a navigation event on public roads whereby participants must visit a number of checkpoints in diverse geographical locations (as stated in a predefined map/track) while still obeying road traffic laws.
- Skateboarding: Skateboarding is an action sport that involves riding and performing tricks using a skateboard, as well as a recreational activity, an art form, an entertainment industry job, and a method of transportation.
- Martial Arts: Martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practiced for a number of reasons such as self-defence; military and law enforcement applications; competition; physical, mental and spiritual development; and recreation & entertainment.
Listed below are a few benefits from outdoor adventure activities:
- Unplug: Nowadays, almost every moment of our daily life is about technology – from working with computers/tablets/Smart phones to countless hours of watching television and OTT service providers at home. An outdoor recreation gives you the opportunity to unplug, rest, and reset. It will reduce the anxiety and stress associated with day to day’s fact paced life.
- Improved Physiques: Outdoor activity can be physically demanding but you can be sure that such activity will work different muscles better than the machines at the gym. The motion of outdoor activities works out your muscles in different ways hence improving muscle tone and strength.
- Mental Health Benefits: Research shows that physical activity reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression. Additionally, there is some specific research into the benefits of outdoor programs that showed an increase in self-efficacy, alertness, and overall well-being.
- Better Sleep: You do have an idea of how you feel tired at the end of the day due to various activities. Outdoor activities will change the way your body moves while exercising muscles and stimulating the mind. After such relaxation, it will be easier to fall and stay asleep throughout the night so that you’ll be prepared to focus on the following day.
- Transferable Skills: Adventure activities such as river rafting, rock climbing and backpacking help children develop skills including good communication skills, trust, leadership and teamwork.
- Increased Environmental Awareness: Outdoor recreation will give you environmental benefits, including the benefit of increased environmental awareness. This can not only make you more aware about it but may also increase your involvement in environmental issues.
- Social Bonding: Outdoor recreation time is a bonding time. Outside, you cannot stop from interacting with other people. When conversations begin, you’ll find the things you have in common with other people and this will be the beginning of new friendships. This one activity will have turned into a social outing.
- Longer Lifespan: As a result of good physical & mental health and strong social ties, your life span will be longer than it would have been without outdoor recreation. Whether you prefer to walk, run, climb, hike, rafting, or whatever it is that you like, breathe the fresh air while you can.
