At Kalinga University, we believe in fostering a learning environment that values diversity, upholds equality, and ensures the well-being of all individuals, including those with special needs and disabilities.
Our commitment is anchored in the Disability Guidelines document, which serves as a roadmap for creating a barrier-free, inclusive campus for students and staff alike.
Kalinga University aligns its practices with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill - 2016, the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2007, and the National Trust Act 1999. These legislations mandate facilities, concessions, exemptions, and reservations to be integrated into all aspects of university life, from admissions to placements.
We recognize and certify a range of disabilities, including but not limited to blindness, low vision, hearing impairment, locomotor disability, intellectual disability, mental illness, autism spectrum disorder, and others. These certifications serve as the gateway for individuals to access various provisions and accommodations.
The prime objective of our policy is to ensure uniform implementation and monitoring of academic and social inclusion for individuals with special needs or disabilities. Through this policy, we aim to create an unambiguous list of reasonable accommodations, outlining the rights and responsibilities of both students and staff.
Our commitment is multi-faceted:
● Infrastructure Accessibility: We are dedicated to making our campus barrier-free, including existing and future buildings.
● Rights-Based Approach: We guide individuals to interact with those with special needs through a rights-based approach, avoiding a charity-based mindset.
● Reservation Implementation: We ensure the proper implementation of reservations, exemptions, and concessions for education and employment as per legislative norms.
● Curricular Adaptations: We implement curricular adaptations to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
● Technology Integration: We leverage technology to benefit students and faculty with special needs in the teaching-learning process.
● Sensitization: We provide awareness and sensitivity training to both teaching and non-teaching staff on disability-related issues.
Our library facilities are tailored to accommodate diverse needs:
● Reserved schemes for book lending.
● Allowing authorized classmates to sign on behalf of individuals with disabilities during book lending.
● Ensuring access to library spaces and technology.
● Extra days for book lending.
● Providing technology for visually impaired individuals, including software for Braille output.
Kalinga University's commitment to inclusive education is not just a promise; it's a mission. By upholding the provisions of the PWD Act and UNCRPD, we strive to make higher education at Kalinga University truly barrier-free, right-based, and inclusive. Together, we can create a campus where every student, regardless of their abilities, can thrive and succeed.
